SAY HELLO TO LEZ
If you don’t already know Lez, and you drive a diesel vehicle (very likely if you own a motorhome), you may have to get to know him soon.
In this case , Lez is not a person but stands for “Low Emission Zone”. At present, Lez only exists in the London area, and covers much of the area within the M25., but it may be only a question of time before this arrangement becomes more widespread, both within the UK and across Europe.
The Zone operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is policed by a battery of cameras at strategic points. Currently it is only active for vehicles over 12 tonnes GVW, but on 7th July 2008 the range will be widened to include vehicles between 3.5 tonnes & 12 tonnes (including motorhomes). By 4th October 2010 this will be further widened to include vehicles between 1.205 tonnes unladen and 3.5 tonnes GVW. Vehicles manufactured before 1st October 2001 may not meet the emission requirements unless some additional work is carried out on the exhaust system.
Information from the cameras will be fed into various databases to establish whether the vehicle concerned meets emission requirements. Unless the vehicle shows as compliant, a daily charge will apply, and this is currently set at £200.
It will pay to become familiar with the extent of the Zone, and also whether your vehicle complies or otherwise.
