planning for 2007? - Don't forget your belongings!
We live in an age when we should expect the worst and plan accordingly when it comes to our possessions. Motorhome owners face particular problems, and sometimes the insurance implications are not well understood. Firstly, let's look at the average private car policy. A comprehensive policy may well contain a section that covers "rugs, coats and personal effects" up to a modest limit, say £200. Even then, cover may be limited to a locked boot or glove compartment. Further problems arise then when you consider personal effects in a motorhome. Even a specialist policy such as ours at Comfort Insurance is not intended as a substitute for proper Household insurance. The items most likely to be sought by thieves are electronic and/or photographic goods. Taking a camera as an example, what would be the point of insuring this as part of the motorhome policy, when cover would no longer apply once the camera was taken out for the day? Much better to cover all such items on an "all risks" basis as part of standard household cover, and they are then covered wherever they happen to be lost or stolen. To deal with this, Comfort Insurance has a range of household policies specially designed for the needs of motorhome owners. Theft from motorhomes is a costly business, and whilst customers often would like us to provide higher and wider levels of cover this would in the end simply increase claims costs, and that in turn would mean we would have to increase premiums
