WINTER WORRIES
Unless you are a full-timer or a die-hard traveller, the chances are that your mortorhome may not see much activity over the next few months. On the face of it, that should mean that there is little to go wrong, but unfortunately that isn’t always the case. The biggest victim of winter inactivity is the humble tyre. If a vehicle is left in one spot for a long period of time, tyre walls can become weakened, and the life of the tyre seriously reduced. The result can be an unsafe tyre, even if there appears to be plenty of tread left.
A few basic precautions can avoid most winter-associated troubles:
- A short drive every few weeks will prevent the tyres remaining on one spot for too long. It will also highlight any potential engine or other mechanical problems before they get too severe.
- Remove any contents that are likely to be affected by damp or cold.
- Remove any valuables or goods that may attract thieves
- If the vehicle has to remain static, consider removing the battery
- Make sure that the storage place is suitable and secure wherever possible. Remember that unless the vehicle is on your own property, or on a Gold or Silver CASSOA site, restrictions in policy cover will apply.
- An occasional general visual check of the vehicle is always useful
