It’s essential that you don’t merely compare the premiums charged by the different insurance companies, without taking into account the varying levels of cover they offer. When I phoned round, it wasn’t always the case that the policy benefits were spelled out to me. That’s why we’ve put a table together so you can quickly see how the various policies differ from one another. See page 98.

It’s crucial that you take into account all the variables, just one of which is how many days you’re allowed to spend on the continent each year. If you’re not planning on crossing the Channel this clearly isn’t an issue, but make sure your plans aren’t likely to change before you renew your cover as there can be surprisingly little flexibility. For example, some companies offer a maximum of 90 days in one year, while if you’re insured with Footman James (for example), you’re limited to 35 days in Europe at a time. Look elsewhere though and you can have six or eight months as standard – or even unlimited European travel as long as you return to the UK every so often. NEXT>
