However light you try and pack when you’re going away, it always seems like you haven’t got enough room for everything you need. Even the largest motorhomes can be a little tight on space and to fit in everything you need you have to be clever with where you store your luggage. Here are a few tips for maximising your storage space and making sure you get the most out of your motorhome…

Clothes Storage

There are few things less economical than living out of a suitcase when it comes to storing clothes but plenty of campers still refuse to ever fully unpack! Unless you’re travelling with business suits or smart shirts, you should find a spot for your clothes somewhere where you wouldn’t be able to store anything else. You can then throw your big, bulky suitcase in an overhead locker or, if you’re camping in one spot for some time, even leave it in an awning.

Roof Mounts

One thing that has attracted a lot of campers over time is the roof box. You can fit them to smaller campers and motorhomes and give a surprising amount of additional space. Roof mounts are not always waterproof, however, so it’s a good idea to use them for outdoor toys or even things like wetsuits and lifejackets.

Making Modifications

Probably the most foolproof way to make the most of your space is by modifying particular compartments to suit your living style. If you are someone who likes a wardrobe to hang your clothes or you have a lot of outdoor kit that needs to be stored securely then a modification might make all the difference. Plan to constrain yourself to what will realistically fit – you probably don’t want to lose any floor space to storage space as that can really make your motorhome feel small.

Motorhome manufacturers are definitely getting better at coming up with clever storage solutions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be clever too! If you’re thinking of modifying your motorhome you’ll need to advise your motorhome insurance provider of what you’re doing and if after that you still don’t have enough space then…well…you’ll have to pack lighter!
