Campervan business thrives on increase of staycations

A woman who fell in love with classic VW campervans is finding there are many others who share her love of them and are turning her camper van hire business into an instant success. Kerry Rutter established Custard Campers in January 2012 after hiring one herself in August last year for a day-trip.

Ten months after setting up the firm, the mother of three, who also owns a tutu-making business, has been inundated with requests from holidaymakers who want to hire one of her classic vans and travel to all four corners of the United Kingdom. Mrs Rutter thinks it is fantastic to see others who have the same fondness for the campervan as she does.

She said: “I just totally fell in love with the camper I rented. She was called Belinda and really seemed to have a personality of her own. I really didn’t want to give her back. I wanted my own Belinda to climb into and drive around and keep me smiling all day. Because I already own my own business making tutus, I am more than used to juggling kids and work. It is all about multi-tasking. It has actually got easier now my children are all at school. The kids are used to me working from home, so they take it all in their stride.”

The business has three vans, which she has named Ramsey, Delia and Nigella (after the celebrity chefs) and Mrs Rutter is hoping to double that number before the holiday season starts in 2013. Prices for hiring the vehicles range from £90 per day between October and March to £750 for seven days during July and August and she has already taken bookings for next year. The vans will be protected by campervan insurance and will be valeted before leaving her premises.
