Over the last couple of weeks we’ve seen some exciting looking 2013 models come out from manufacturers, some are already starting to hit the showrooms but most will be released for general sale at Manchester’s Caravan and Motorhome show in January. So with Christmas on the way there will be plenty of people looking to make a big new purchase; but when is the right time to buy?
Pre versus Post Christmas
Buying before Christmas is likely to be a shade more expensive than afterwards as some manufacturers drop their prices slightly over the Christmas period. You will probably also find Christmas is a busy time for motorhome retailers and you may be able to negotiate a better deal on things like extras and motorhome insurance if you buy directly and after the Christmas period.
2012 models versus 2013 models
The really difficult decision comes when deciding whether to buy a 2012 or 2013 model. You will find substantial savings on older models when new ones are released, but you will probably miss out on some new features. One thing to think about is the efficiency; motorhome engines are becoming rapidly more efficient and a mpg saving on a new model may wipe out the cost difference altogether.
Second Hand Timing
A whole different game, of course, is buying a second hand motorhome. There is certainly a peak of purchases just before the summer, but really second had buying is about finding the right model. With such a variable market, you stand to lose more from picking out the wrong motorhome altogether than buying it at the wrong time so if you see something you like, perhaps it’s time to snap it up! It could be useful to wait until just after Christmas to make that big motorhome buy, but the most important thing is that you end up with a motorhome which you love. For such an expensive purchase you sometimes need to sacrifice a slightly higher price for a better quality product overall.
