Caravan Drivers Warned against Potholes over Christmas

In the past couple of weeks it has been reported that those that are planning on spending the festive season in their caravans need to be aware of dangerous road conditions due to ice and flooding, however they are now also being warned against damage that can be caused to their caravans due to potholes in the road.

Those that are planning on travelling in their caravans this Christmas have already been given tips about how to protect their vehicles including having adequate motorhome insurance. Many drivers have also been investing in winter tyres so that the likelihood of having an accident due to wet or slippery roads is reduced, but even having winter tyres may not protect drivers against the dangers of potholes. Potholes are created due to the fact that water has been seeping into small cracks in the road, then expanding when frozen making the cracks get bigger and bigger and eventually causing large holes in the road.

The AA recently released a list of where the worst potholes are in the UK, with Scotland being the worsts affected. The study found that Scotland has an average of 8.9 potholes per mile, with the average across the country being only 6.25. London was found to be the least affected by potholes with only 4.9 per mile. Duncan McClure Fisher from Warranty Direct has warned drivers to be safe when driving along roads that are affected by potholes, and has said “More cold weather over this Christmas will not only create more holes, it will move council staff from repairs to gritting duties, so potholes will appear faster than they are getting fixed. The only way to avoid damaging your car is to be on the lookout.”

For those that are planning to travel with their caravans this Christmas, try to use main roads instead of smaller ones that are less likely to have potholes fixed in order to protect your vehicle. If you do encounter damages due to potholes make sure you call your motorhome insurance as soon as possible to ensure that it is fixed before attempting to drive again.
