Re-use, Reduce, Recycle for Motorhome Owners

recycling binsWe’re all starting to get better at easy environmental things like recycling in our homes; we have the right facilities available and easy collections day after day. When out touring however, that can often go to pot and we find it much harder to keep to our environmental principles. Here are a few tips for re-using, reducing and recycling when touring…

Think about your Purchases

The easiest way to get rid of waste is to avoid wasting it all together. Sometimes that’s just impossible, but there are small things that can help you keep waste down. Rather than buying new packets of food from a supermarket each time, why not invest in some tupperware and bring food from home. This works especially well with cereal and dried foods.

Take Recycling Regularly and Often

Get into the habit of taking recycling while it accumulates – every day if possible. It doesn’t have to be an extra effort, work it into your routine when you leave the park. This is also important for keeping mice and rats at bay – unfortunately you won’t have much of a claim on your motorhome insurance if your van becomes a target because of undisposed waste.

Buy some Bins

Just one bin means it’s too easy to put everything in and never bother sorting it. Having two or three means recycling becomes second nature. Buy some bins for cardboard and plastic and make sure you take glass when possible. Better still, why not reuse some cardboard boxes – they do the trick just as well!

It’s no longer the job of governments to sort out the environmental problems we have, it’s down to each and every one of us. It’s not difficult to keep up your standards while on the road, it just takes a bit of time and effort.
