In general, the summer months are the busiest for motorhome sites and travel, with many travellers preferring to hit the road while the weather is warm. But just because it’s winter doesn’t mean your motorhome adventures need to stop. In fact, winter adventures in your motorhome or campervan offer unique experiences you won’t find at any other time of year, from quieter campsites to exciting seasonal events!

When it comes to Christmas the German’s don’t do things by half, and their Christmas markets are something of a spectacle. Each year a number of towns across Germany host their own Christmas markets, including Dusseldorf, Hanover, Dresden and Berlin. Most of these markets begin during mid to late November and end just before the New Year in order to accommodate the thousands of people that come from far and wide to sample the food, drinks and gifts.

Edinburgh Hogmanay Festival, Scotland

Looking for post-Christmas thrills and excitement? Then Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival is the place to be! Featured in the Discovery Channel’s ‘Top 25 World Travel Experiences,’ Hogmanay is one of the World’s biggest New Year’s celebrations that stretches across several days. Hogmanay begins on the 29th of December with the Torchlight Procession, where over 15,000 torchbearers illuminate the city streets in a spectacular kick off to the festivities.

You’ll find a huge range of fun filled events and activities to attend across the Hogmanay celebrations, but by far the biggest is the New Year’s Street Party. This incredible event consists of live music, DJs, international street theatre, pipers, drummers, thrilling funfair attractions, and an unforgettable fireworks display to welcome the New Year in style. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

The Northern Lights – The Lofoten Islands, Norway

If you’re dreaming of a winter escape filled with wonder, chasing one of the world’s greatest natural phenomena, the Northern Lights should be at the top of your list. The Northern Lights are often spoken about with awe, but nothing compares to witnessing their shimmering colours in person! Norway’s Lofoten Islands are one of the most popular destinations for those chasing the Aurora Borealis, drawing visitors from September through March in hopes of catching the amazing spectacle.

There are a number of websites you can visit where you can book your trip, as well as find out more about motorhome parks and facilities. Don’t forget that no one is guaranteed to see the lights, so plan a few alternative adventures to make the most of your trip, whatever the weather brings.

If you don’t have the time to travel into Europe this winter then head to the New Forest in Hampshire, where there are a number of campsites available to motorhomers. The New Forest is popular among many motorhome owners especially in the winter months when many choose to spend Christmas surrounded by peaceful woodland and picturesque scenery.

Finally, Amsterdam’s stunning light festival is a spectacle to experience! This annual winter event runs from November through to January, making the city’s canals and streets glow with unique art installations. Each year’s festival explores a new theme; the 2025/26 festival focuses on “Legacy” reflecting on the idea of what we leave behind.

There are multiple different ways to experience the Amsterdam Light Festival and take in the glowing artworks. You can cruise along the canals by boat for a scenic view from the water, or take on the 6.5km walking route to explore the installations up close. For the walking route there is also a festival app that offers tailored experiences, including an exciting kid friendly trail with fun facts and a scavenger hunt, or a food walk so you can get a taste of the local culinary scene along the way. Alternatively, you could also hop on a bike and explore the illuminated trail as you ride through Amsterdam’s lively streets!
