What are your Pet Hates on the Road?

Image of Stop SignAs much as we hate to admit it, things don’t always go smoothly every time a motorhome or campervan owner heads out onto the road. Unfortunately, as motorhomes and campervans are larger than your average vehicle they have to put up with a lot more hassle, especially from inconsiderate road users.

So here at Comfort Insurance we thought that we would let our readers vent about what drives them potty while on the road, and to get you started we’ve listed some of the most common pet hates….

Not Letting you Merge

Motorhomes and campervans are not the fastest vehicles in the world, which is why merging onto busy roads such as motorways takes a certain amount of skill. However, if there is one thing that makes this whole procedure much more difficult it’s other drivers not moving over or letting you in. As a motorhome owner you probably already know that other drivers don’t like getting stuck behind you, however not letting you onto the motorway is a poor way to go about this. If anything it just means that everything has to slow down and potentially cause a build-up of traffic!

Hiding in your Blind Spot

Numerous things tend to hide in motorhome or campervans’ blind spots: posts, fences, other drivers and occasionally even people! People seem to forget that as your vehicle is rather big it subsequently has a number of blind spots, blind spots which they tend to hide in without due care. Luckily, you can purchase specialist blind spot mirrors which will give you a better view of everything going on around you, however that doesn’t mean that you won’t still knock a fence or two while performing a difficult manoeuvre…

Failing to Indicate

All vehicles have these special lights on the front, back and sides which alert other drivers where you are going. These special lights come in particularly handy when at a roundabout, and all you need to do to turn them on is press a little lever next to your steering wheel. Even though we may joke, not indicating is a pet hate not just for motorhome and campervan owners but all motorists. Furthermore, it’s extremely illegal and is the cause of many an accident, which is why if the police catch you they’re likely to issue you a fine!

Insulting Motorhome Drivers/Road Rage

Believe it or not, motorhome and campervan owners are not the cause of all the traffic in the world. Sure, during the summer holidays there are more of them on the road, however there are also more cars and coaches! Being stuck in traffic can be extremely stressful, especially on hot days or when you have a plane or ferry to catch. However, what isn’t acceptable is road rage, and unfortunately motorhome owners tend to get the brunt of this during busy periods. Even though this is a popular pet hate it’s always best to remind yourself not to take it personally or engage with those who are clearly in a bad mood.

Other Motorhome Drivers…

Ok we’re going to put our hands up here: not all motorhome or campervan owners are great drivers, meaning they can often cause havoc on the road! Failing to understand how to drive a recreational vehicle properly means you are not only a danger to yourself but also others on the road, which is why if you think your skills aren’t up to scratch you should take part in a driving course or practice for a couple of days before heading off on a long journey. This is especially important if you are towing another vehicle or a trailer as they can cause accidents if not handled properly.
