Wales Introduces Default 20mph Speed Limit

What’s the National Speed limit for Wales?

Currently in Wales most roads have a speed limit of 30mph, however, from the 17th September 2023 the Welsh government are implementing a national speed limit of 20mph on restricted roads across Wales.

With this new legislation the Welsh government stated they aim to:

  • “Reduce the number of collisions and severe injuries from them (also reducing the impact on the NHS from treating the people who are injured)
  • Encourage more people to walk and cycle in our communities
  • Help to improve our health and well-being
  • Make our streets safer
  • Safeguard the environment for future generations.”

Exceptions to the New 20mph Speed Limit

There will be exceptions to this 20mph speed limit. The Welsh government has stated that they recognise that not all roads that currently have a 30mph limit will be suitable to change to a 20mph speed limit. Councils will be able to implement exceptions to keep a 30mph limit on roads where there is appropriate reasoning for doing so.

Divided Opinions of the Welsh Public

The legislation has caused a divide within the Welsh community, with many in areas where the 20mph speed limit was trailled agreeing that this change has made the area feel safer and had a positive impact on the community. Although, equally a lot of opposition has been expressed to the 20mph change with many questioning its impact on vehicle health (specifically the brakes when going downhill at low speeds), traffic, commute times, and the environment. A poll carried out by ITV Wales showed that two-thirds of the Welsh public who answered the poll disagreed with the 20mph speed limit. As well as this, a petition on change.org named “Stop the Welsh Govt imposing blanket 20-mph speed limits across the whole of Wales by 2023” has received over 68,000 signatures, and a petition on the Senedd Cymru Welsh Parliament named “Stop the change of speed limits to 20mph on 17th September” received 21,920 signatures leading to a debate by the Senedd on 28th June 2023.
