Campervan Crusade for Master Chef Finalist

A borrowed campervan will be playing a big part in a bid to boost tourist numbers to Yorkshire next year as a Master Chef finalist and his colleague plan to use the van to advertise the best of the counties food and drink.

Tom Rennolds, who narrowly missed out on being crowned Master Chef of 2011, has borrowed the campervan from a friend and it will house his colleague Jonny Ross and himself as they travel round their home county sampling the best of Yorkshire food in preparation for the Yorkshire Food Festival which will be held in Ilkley later this summer. Their epic food tasting pilgrimage will be recorded by a film crew and daily updates will appear on You Tube throughout the journey. The intrepid duo intend to visit breweries, bakers, butchers, tea rooms and restaurants in their bid to find the top food producers in the area and hope they will then present their wares at the festival.

Mr Rennolds was excited about completing the trip in a VW campervan saying: “The van is great and it will be a new experience for me, we’ve borrowed it, bought campervan insurance to protect it, and now intend to make the best out of it. I do hope to have a restaurant in the future but I want to see more things first, that is why I am going on this Best of Yorkshire tour. I am meeting people and getting a broader knowledge to find my own way. I want to find the best, celebrate them at the food festival and make everyone aware of what we have to offer.”

Greg Verity, who has organised the filming of the trip for Welcome to Yorkshire, said “We are delighted to be working with Tom and Jonny on this project, which has all the right ingredients for a great event and we think the campervan will be one of the stars. Tom has already done an outstanding job in flying the flag for Yorkshire and our fantastic cuisine with his success on Master Chef and this tour and festival will build on that great work.”
