Motorhome on Flag on Back

Have You Thought about Becoming a Full-Time Motorhomer?

We all love our motorhomes.

The freedom to go wherever we want, whenever we want, is a feeling that can’t be beaten.

But at the end of the day, most of us return to our homes on a more permanent basis.

Others, however, don’t.

There are many who choose to live life on the road full-time. Without a fixed address waiting for them somewhere.

Could this be you?

The very thought is both exciting and frightening. But the majority who take the plunge, sell their house and begin life as a full-time motorhomer don’t regret it.

It’s definitely worth considering…

What Are the Benefits to Living Full-Time in a Motorhome?

There are numerous positives to living in a motorhome – without any permanent residence waiting for you back home.

First of all – you get to see the world. As much of it as you like.

You can take your motorhome anywhere in the UK, or venture out across the Channel to mainland Europe.

As if there aren’t enough incredible places here – with vibrant cities such as Amsterdam, Rome and Barcelona – you can even go further out to other parts of the world.

With the right visas, trips through Asia and Africa are certainly on the cards. If you’re so inclined.

You get to see something entirely different on a weekly basis. Settle down in a spot you like for a few days, then drive to the next destination for a completely fresh experience.

It’s great to get out of your regular routine too. No more crowded morning commutes, or dreary office work spaces.

But one of the best things about living as a full-time motorhomer is you get to decide who you spend all your time with.

You don’t have to worry about annoying colleagues, or loud neighbours (well, maybe, but you can just move your motorhome!).

What Are the Negatives to Living Full-Time in a Motorhome?

Obviously this sort of life isn’t for everyone.

Some prefer a little more stability, with a regular job and a home that stays in the same place.

Life in a motorhome can be tricky when it comes to finances. Unless you’re retired and have a good amount save up, or have won the lottery, you probably still need to work.

The good news is that, depending on your job, it is possible to work remotely – from wherever you are in the world.

But most of the time it means working for yourself. And it can be a struggle when you don’t always have a guaranteed income.

Some people also have trouble with living in a small space for large periods of time.

You can try and counter this by investing in an awning, creating additional room outside of your motorhome.

Others aren’t bothered by a lack of space – and actually prefer the cosier setting a motorhome provides.

The negatives to living in a motorhome full-time are only really negatives to certain people.

If you feel like you can handle these types of issues – then go for it!

Things to Consider

If you are thinking about giving up your regular life for a more adventurous lifestyle, then there are many things you need to consider.

First of all, you need to decide on the motorhome you’re going to be spending your life in.

You might already have one – but how old is it? Will it last the next few years? Money might be tight on the road, and you don’t want to be shelling out on repairs.

Get your motorhome serviced before making any plans.

Something else to think about is the equipment you have and intend on taking.

Make sure you have all the tools needed to sort out any repairs that might need doing – those that don’t require a mechanic.

And get yourself a small portable heater. When you’re connected to a campsite’s electricity, this is a much more efficient way of keeping warm.

Our final recommendation would be to properly budget.

As mentioned, holding down a job whilst on the road can be tricky, and money might not be guaranteed every month.

So it’s important to never spend more than you can afford. Having a proper budget will absolutely help here.

Get Your Motorhome Covered!

Before setting off on the adventure of a lifetime, there is one more (really important) thing you need to do.

Get appropriate insurance for your motorhome.  Insurance for full timing is more difficult to find than when you travel occasionally. There will be stipulations where ever you go for insurance.  At Comfort Insurance, we require all full timers to have an address in the UK that the vehicle and drivers licence is registered to. Every policy is looked at on a case by case basis including the make and model and age of the vehicle.

Our coverage comes with the following benefits:

  • £5,000 personal effects
  • 9 months EU cover – In a single trip or multiple visits
  • Gas and Explosion cover
  • Accident and Recovery Cover
  • Emergency Accommodation
  • UK and European Breakdown

Give yourself peace of mind by making sure you’re covered, Call Comfort today on 0208 9840 666 and discuss your specific case.
