Cheap and Easy Ways To Avoid Night-Time Chancers When Wild Camping

Going wild camping is one of the best ways to be adventurous in your motorhome. Getting back to nature, disconnecting from the world and going to sleep in a new location each night – what’s not to love?

Yet even though there will always be a sense of risk and a few things to be wary of when wild camping, you shouldn’t ever feel your safety is compromised. To this end, you’ll need to take certain steps to protect your motorhome from anybody looking to take advantage of you while you’re camping in the wild.

So, what are the most effective ways for you to secure yourself? Luckily, there’s no need to lose money or time on fancy equipment and gadgets. There are plenty of simple precautions you can take to boost your motorhome security.

Keep reading for our best cheap and easy ways to avoid night-time chancers when wild camping.

Make your vehicle less of an easy target

Generally speaking, criminals like easy wins. The better they think their chances are of getting away without getting caught, the more likely they are to give it a go. The big idea of motorhome security is to make your vehicle as unappealing a prospect as possible. More or less every motorhome security measure follows this principle, so it’s worth bearing in mind when implementing the rest of the strategies below or devising your own.

Remove items from sight

Having lots of valuables and possessions lying around on display in your motorhome is a big part of what makes them attractive targets in the first place. Make sure to keep the interior of your vehicle nice and tidy, and your valuables safely stowed away.

You should keep your most important items on your person – things that could ruin your holiday if you lost them, such as credit cards, mobile devices and passports. Consider investing in a belt bag, as these will make it much easier for you to keep the essentials close by without it being an inconvenience.

Use your seat belts

It’s probably not the first thing that springs to mind when you think of motorhome security tips but, trust us, using your seatbelt really does work. Of course, we don’t mean for you to strap yourself in. Instead, use your seatbelts to secure your doors.

Simply loop each seatbelt through the door handle before securing it in its buckle. Finally, adjust the strap so it can’t move. This way, even if an intruder unlocks your doors, they still won’t be able to open them.

Lock your vehicle in place

In most cases, thieves are interested in the contents of your motorhome. But what if they’re after your motorhome itself? Locking your vehicle in place is the best defensive measure you can take against theft – and there are a few devices you can use to do this.

  • Wheel clamps go around the outside of your wheel to prevent them from moving
  • Steering locks stop the steering wheel from turning when attached
  • Clutch claws lock the motor pedals together, preventing anyone from driving your vehicle

In addition to effectively stopping any would-be thieves from driving away in your motorhome, these pieces of equipment also act as visual deterrents. Visible from the outside of the vehicle, they’ll go a long way in making criminals think twice about how easy it would be to break into your prized possession.

Play recordings

Most thieves will only attempt a break-in when they know no one’s home. Even if it’s the middle of the night or you’re away from your motorhome, there’s a simple trick you can use to give the impression that your vehicle is buzzing with activity. Simply leave a recording of a conversation or a growling dog running to deter any criminals that come close.

Keep your vehicle well lit

Consider installing motion-activated lights somewhere on the outside of your motorhome. They’ll automatically light up when they detect movement close to your vehicle.

This means you’ll always be able to see, even in the poorly lit areas that come hand-in-hand with wild camping. It’s a good idea to carry spare lights and batteries with you and make sure you have plenty of emergency lighting such as bright torches.

You should do everything you can to make the chances of a break-in as slim as possible. But bear in mind that these things do happen, even if you’ve taken all the right precautions. That’s why it pays to get the right motorhome protection just in case.
