Hitting the Slopes: Planning the Perfect Motorhome Skiing Holiday
If you have the time and the budget then visiting a ski resort during December is one of the most exciting and memorable trips you can have; however ski holidays often require more organisation than beach holidays. If you are planning on taking your motorhome with you on your next skiing holiday there are a number of factors you need to consider including the weather, the types of campsites available and, of course, the slopes! This is why Comfort Insurance has put together this handy blog filled with tips on planning your next motorhome skiing holiday:
Choosing a Ski Resort
We are extremely lucky when it comes to ski resorts here in Europe as there are hundreds to choose from, each with their own charms. When it comes to choosing a ski resort one of the first things you need to take into consideration is your budget, as some ski resorts can be very dear. For example, the Three Valleys in the French Alps is quite costly, however their facilities and the slopes are guaranteed to please. When it comes to ski holidays you generally get what you pay for: the cheaper the resort the fewer the slopes, so if you are an experienced skier you may want to pay a bit extra to make sure you get the best runs possible! However, even though the slopes make a big difference, when it comes to choosing a ski resort it’s not the only thing you need to keep in mind…
Motorhome Camping Facilities
Motorhomes and skiing holidays go hand in hand, which means that most ski resorts have high-quality motorhome camping facilities. However, there are some things that you will need to take into consideration, such as the weather that you will be facing and whether there are sufficient facilities on site. Most ski resorts who specialise in motorhome camping suggest visitors to bring portable generators with them just in case the worst happens. You will also be legally required to bring snow chains with you if you are traveling more than 1400m above sea level (which you will be on most mountains!) To make sure you find the right resort take the time to do your research and talk to those that have been to certain areas before to find out what facilities are available.
Skiing and Snowboarding Equipment
Whether you are a skiing fanatic or an avid snowboarder the one thing you will always need is equipment. Unfortunately, ski equipment is quite bulky, especially when you consider the fact that you have to bring the physical apparatus with you as well as bulky snow jackets, ski boots and safety equipment. Luckily, most ski resorts offer visitors the opportunity to rent their equipment when they get there, however this can often end up costing you more in the long run if you go skiing on a regular basis. Here at Comfort Insurance we love a bargain (and not just when it comes to motorhome insurance!) which is why we suggest visiting your local charity shops before heading on your next holiday to see if you can pick up some low-cost, second-hand skiing equipment!
No skiing holiday is complete without taking part in a bit of après ski, and the wildness of these post-skiing events varies from resort to resort. For example, Krazy Kanguruh in St. Anton, Austria is a Mecca for young skiers looking to party into the small hours of the morning, while Griabli specialises in live music for an older crowd. Even though you will be staying in your motorhome during your trip it is essential that you know the type of night life to expect otherwise you could end up getting a bit frustrated with your neighbours! Again, most of this information is available online, however if you are unsure it’s always best to check with those that work at the ski resort to ensure you get your beauty sleep.
One of the best things about ski holidays is that no two are the same, especially if you travel around different parts of Europe. By doing your research you will be able to ensure that you have the ideal skiing holiday and spend December traveling in style!
