Cookers in Campervans

One of the great appeals of campervans is that you’re able to easily, quickly and safely prepare food in the comfort of the indoors. There are a lot of options available to you if you’re looking to take on a conversion or buy a used model, so what should you be looking out for?

Hobs and Burners

There are a good selection of hob-only units which offer anywhere between one and four burners but, of course, space will be a consideration. Remember that worktop space is important and you want to keep as much clear space in your kitchen as possible but balance this against the number of people you’ll be cooking for – it will be difficult to get food for five or six people done in one batch on one hob.

Many campervans do have space for an oven and they can be great for slow cooking food or even just keeping things warm. If space is tight then search for an oven which does a number of functions – believe it or not you’ll be able to find models which offer an oven, grill and microwave all in one. This sort of thing can be quite expensive but gives you real flexibility with your cooking and, really, allows you to do anything.

Gas Piping

Almost all the cookers you’ll find will need to be linked up to your gas supply. This is fine, in principle, but moving the gas pipes can be quite a challenge. Take good measurements of the space you have around your gas pipes when shopping for a new cooker or oven and take into account any worktop that overhangs. If you do have to move you gas supply you may have to let your campervan insurance provider know and ensure you get a trained professional to do the job.

There are plenty of options when it comes to cookers and so you’ll need to shop around, but bear in mind primarily how many people you’ll be expecting to cater for and also what sort of food you tend to eat when you’re camping; a grill might be a lovely addition but you might well never use it! Take a considered choice and remember – if it doesn’t fit, don’t buy it!
