How to Maintain Your Motorhome: A Checklist

Think your motorhome is perfect?

Well, it probably is. Right now. But it likely won’t stay that way. Like everything else, over time it will begin to show signs that it’s getting older. You can simply allow this to happen, which will make it an uncomfortable living space, and lose its value. Or, you can properly maintain it on a regular basis. Here are a few things you can do to maintain your motorhome, and ensure that it is in the best possible condition for as long as possible.

Check for Damp

Damp is avoidable, but it is by no means certain that you won’t encounter this issue. Catching it early will help you stop it from getting worse, so check around the motorhome on a monthly basis – even if you haven’t been using it. We’ve written a handy guide on damp here.

Check for Leaks

Leaks can occur in the windows, door frames and other seals. Even the slightest bit of damage can create a gap for water to fall through when it’s raining. You probably won’t notice if there’s any damage during the summer, but it’s important to check before you find out the hard way.

Flush the Water

If you haven’t used your motorhome for a couple of months, and then start getting ready for a weekend away, replace the water in your tank. Give it a good flush out, and clean/sterilise the tank – so you can be drinking/bathing in fresh, clean water.

Check Gas Appliances

Check that anything gas operated is in top condition. Sometimes insects and other pets can cause problems over time, particularly if you haven’t used the motorhome in a while. Not only can this be irritating, but also dangerous if there is serious damage.

Check Other Appliances

Ensure all your electrical items are still in working order. Whether it’s a fridge, freezer or something else entirely, you can live more efficiently in a motorhome where everything runs smoothly. And appliances tend to have problems after a couple of years’ use.

Give it a Clean

This may sound obvious – and you might not think yourself particularly messy – but an untidy and unclean motorhome can cause huge problems down the line. Every now and again, give it a proper clean, from top to bottom. Even a little bit of dirt can, over time, cause deterioration.

Check the Tyres

If you’re on the road a lot, then it’s essential that you tyres are in the best possible condition. If you’ve haven’t been using your motorhome through the winter months, then the tyre pressure has probably decreased – which can cause a blowout whilst on the road.

Check the Battery

The battery in a motorhome needs to be charged if you haven’t used it for a while, otherwise it might not perform correctly. We’d recommend charging it if you haven’t driven the motorhome anywhere for about six weeks.

Check the Oil

As with all vehicles regularly on the road, checking the oil and coolant levels is basic, necessary maintenance. If you need a top-up, then get it sorted as soon as possible. Whilst you’re at it, check your windscreen wipers have enough water to last your next trip.

Servicing/MOT

Getting your motorhome serviced can help make you aware of problems that you otherwise wouldn’t have seen. Also, make sure your MOT is done, and that your insurance is valid and up to date before you hit the road again.

That’s our checklist of ten ways to maintain your motorhome. If you like, you can print out this page to remind you of all the things you need to do.
This should ensure that your motorhome stays in excellent condition, and you can enjoy your next adventure without any problems.
